AMEN GED program

One hundred-twelve (112) persons attended GED classes held on a daily basis from 9-12:30pm. Of those who began the program 48% demonstrated that they were serious by attending for at least three weeks to take classes in math, interpretive arts, writing, science, and social studies. After receiving scores high enough to qualify them to take the official test, 6 passed the entire test, 7 passed partials, and 7 others are in the process. Five eight week sessions of classes were held continuously during the ten month school year with sessions beginning in September, November, January, March, and May.

AMEN (Anacostia Men’s Employment Network) Job readiness

Thirteen job readiness sessions of three weeks duration were held that welcomed 189 men and women. A total of one hundred fifteen (115) clients graduated after having fulfilled a curriculum of Self Development Skills, Life Skills, Vocational Skills, and an Employment Component. All graduates were also required to have a videotaped mock interview, wear interview attire, write a resume’, and know the basics of self-marketing including how to handle a prison record positively. Of those who graduated over the past year, 82% are either employed, have gone on to training or further education. As part of the Employment Component graduates are tracked on a quarterly.

Ex-offender Support Group

One hundred people registered for the Ex-Offender Support Group that met on a weekly basis from September through March. An open house atmosphere welcomed those in the process of re-socialization to spirited comradery with good food and directed discussion and honest talk on what is needed to succeed on the ‘outside’. Halfway houses send referrals but Ex-Offender Support Group is open to the public.
